Cook Islands set up Papua New Guinea showdown after historic Tonga win

The hosts are one win away from qualification after a commanding 4-0 victory over Tonga at the 2026 OFC U19 Men's Championship in Rarotonga.

The Cook Islands are one step away from a place at the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Under-19 Men’s Championship after a dominant 4-0 victory over Tonga set up a decisive clash with Papua New Guinea.

The landmark result for the hosts marks their first win over Tonga at U19 level in OFC competition, and keeps their qualification hopes alive on home soil.

Captain Dallas Rongokea led the way with a first-half double, putting the Cook Islands in control in front of an excited home crowd in Rarotonga.

Rongokea, 18, opened the scoring in the 16th minute, finishing from close range after a low cross from Josef Crocombe.

The Cook Islands continued to threaten, with Kenya Enoka striking the post with an overhead kick and Maui Denny going close before halftime.

Their pressure paid off in the 43rd minute when Crocombe reacted quickest to a rebound off the post.

Rongokea then struck again in first-half stoppage time, heading home from a set-piece to give the Cook Islands a comfortable lead at the break.

Head coach Ngati Manuela said playing at home had given the squad a lift with many players experiencing a special moment representing their island in front of family and supporters

“Very rarely do we get the opportunity to host and to have our countrymen and families supporting us right there,” Manuela told OFC media. “This is a big thing, not just as a leader for the team, but for the players individually.

“Especially for those, this is the first time they’ve stepped foot on their motherland. In that shared spirit of family and community and country, I think it’s going to really lift our spirits.”

The result was effectively sealed in the second half when a Crocombe cross forced Tonga defender Fetu'u Tonga into an own goal, making it 4-0 on the hour mark.

Tonga managed a late consolation through Fonua Moala in stoppage time, but it did little to take the shine off a historic day for the hosts.

The Cook Islands will now face Papua New Guinea in a winner-takes-all match on Saturday, 1pm (NZT), with top spot in the group and a place at the 2026 OFC U19 Men's Championship in Sāmoa, in September on the line.

The match is expected to be a high-stakes contest with both sides knowing qualification is within reach.

For Tonga, back-to-back defeats mean they leave Rarotonga without a win from their two matches.
