Hat-trick hero Tita puts PNG one win from OFC U19 championship

David Tita stars with three goals and an assist as Papua New Guinea move closer to qualification with a commanding win over Tonga in Rarotonga.

Papua New Guinea are just one victory away from securing a place at the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Under-19 Men's Championship after a dazzling performance from David Tita inspired a 4-0 win over Tonga in Rarotonga on Saturday.

Making their first appearance in the qualifying stage of the competition, PNG made an early statement as Tita scored a hat-trick and set up another goal in a dominant opening-round display at the Cook Islands Football Association (CIFA) Academy.

The result gives Papua New Guinea the early advantage in the race for the lone qualifying spot at next year's OFC U19 Men's Championship in Sāmoa.

Tita was at the centre of everything dangerous for PNG.

The forward opened the scoring in the 14th minute after captain Nalau Moses picked him out with a well-timed pass.

Tita calmly beat Tonga goalkeeper Gordon Li to score the first goal of the qualifying tournament.

While PNG controlled much of the contest, Tonga created chances of their own and remained in the match for long periods.

Playmaker Tevita Falepapalangi looked their most dangerous attacking option and helped create Tonga's best first-half opportunity.

He held up possession inside the box before finding teammate Siaki Lonitenisi, who fired over the crossbar from close range.

Falepapalangi continued to push forward after the break and had a chance to level the scores but his effort was comfortably gathered by PNG goalkeeper Ricky Hulana.

Tonga's hopes took a major hit with 20 minutes remaining when defender Vainga Loti was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a high challenge.

PNG quickly made their numerical advantage count.

Tita produced two moments of individual brilliance in the closing stages to put the result beyond doubt.

His second goal came from long range with a powerful left-foot strike that flew into the top corner.

He then completed his hat-trick with a superb solo run, weaving past several defenders before beating the goalkeeper.

The 19-year-old was not finished there.

Deep into stoppage time, Tita delivered a low cross into the penalty area for Benjamin Kila to score PNG's fourth goal and complete an outstanding personal performance.

The win is only Papua New Guinea's third victory at OFC U19 level since 2016, with all three coming against Tonga.

More importantly, it leaves them in control of their own destiny.

PNG can secure qualification for the OFC U19 Men's Championship when they face hosts the Cook Islands on Friday.

For Tonga, Tuesday's clash against the Cook Islands has become a must-win match if they are to keep their hopes of reaching Sāmoa alive.
