Matty’s On the Five is our weekly sports wrap that covers five of the biggest moments in the Pacific, as determined by Matt Manukuo.
Talofa lava! What an incredible weekend in the sports world. Joseph Parker delivers a massive KO victory, Sāmoan netball triumphs, and Auckland FC continue their dominance over Wellington. Let’s dive in!
Joseph Parker makes his mark
With only two days' notice, Lupesoliai La’auli Joseph Parker finished his new opponent in just two rounds.
Parker stopped the heavyweight division’s boogeyman, Martin Bakole, who stepped in after Daniel Dubois withdrew from the fight.
Bakole came in an astounding 50 pounds heavier and landed some of the stronger shots in the opening round. His clinch work seemed to trouble Parker, but he remained unfazed.
A standout moment was when Parker threw an overhand right at Bakole, who shook his head and kept moving forward. But another overhand right from Parker secured the KO victory, causing Bakole’s legs to buckle.
Parker is now awaiting a rescheduled bout with Dubois or may look ahead to facing Oleksandr Usyk for another shot at the undisputed championship.
Tifa Moana wins PacAus Netball Series
Tifa Moana clinched the PacificAus Netball Series by defeating Scotland 54-52. With 10 points, the Sāmoans completed a clean sweep and marked their first series win in five years.
Coach Natalie Mathews praised the team's performance and highlighted the crucial support from staff and fans.
She emphasised the need for more funding and matches to improve their world ranking and qualify for the Commonwealth Games.
The team showcased strong performances throughout the tournament, defeating Fiji, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, and Australia's Black Swans.
Mathews expressed hope for future sponsorship and continued support to help the team achieve their ambitions.

Auckland FC dismantle Wellington Phoenix
Once again. Auckland FC have proven their dominance, thrashing Wellington Phoenix 6-1.
Neyder Moreno was on fire, scoring a hat-trick, while Logan Rogerson added two more, making a statement.
The game drew a record crowd of over 27,000 fans who cheered them on. Meanwhile, once the top team, the Phoenix appears to be lost, losing their third straight match against Auckland.
It’s safe to say Auckland FC have established themselves as the new kings of New Zealand football!

Moana Pasifika fall to the Reds
Moana Pasifika had a rollercoaster game against the Queensland Reds, losing 56-36 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane last Friday.
They started poorly, conceding three quick tries in the first 12 minutes, but then began to find their rhythm. Captain Ardie Savea even scored his first try for the team, which was monumental!
Moana took advantage of the Reds’ two yellow cards and closed the gap, getting within six points early in the second half.
Solomon Alaimalo and Kyran Taumoefolau added some spark with their tries, showing Moana’s fighting spirit.
But despite their efforts, the Reds pulled away late in the game. While Moana’s attack showed promise, their defence will need some serious work after letting in 101 points in their first two matches.
The team will return to Auckland this week to prepare for their first home game at North Harbour Stadium.

Warriors prepare for Las Vegas
The Warriors are gearing up for their NRL season opener in Las Vegas. They have gone all out in their preparations, including receiving a briefing from local police about what to expect in Sin City.
Young talent Ali Leiataua is set to make his mark as a first-grade regular. He will start at centre after impressing during the pre-season and earning the trust of coach Andrew Webster.
The team are staying at the luxurious Resorts World hotel, which is equipped with casinos and restaurants. But, they will stay focused during training sessions, including a workout at the UFC Gym.
The match against the Raiders is scheduled for Sunday and will be broadcast live on Fox. This will give millions of Americans a chance to watch rugby league in action - and perhaps see Leiataua’s breakout moment.
