Will's Word: Will this Government finally take on the supermarket giants?

Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis is set to announce a plan for a third supermarket but will they deliver real competition or is this just more talk?

This weekend, Nicola Willis, our Economic Growth Minister, is set to reveal the Cabinet's grand plan to finally break up the supermarket duopoly and introduce a third player into the market.

Happy days! Hurrah! If indeed this is true but frankly, this should have happened ages ago, perhaps even years ago.

For too long have we acquiesced and been at the mercy of the country's two major supermarket chains, Foodstuffs and Woolworths, that operate less like grocery providers and more like mafia bosses.

The Government has been making noises about supermarket competition for quite some time, right back to the election campaign of 2023.

Yet, here we are, still waiting for a tangible outcome. You could argue that the Government's been working in the background on ensuring that they can bring forward a proper plan.

I understand that perspective, but this is taking ages.

Willis says she's looking at incentives, so what would that even mean for this third supermarket provider, or for supermarket providers in this country?

Tax breaks? Handing over government land? A magic wand? Who knows?

If the Government actually pulls this off and brings in a competitor with real muscle, I'll be the first to head to Parliament's forecourt and applaud them.

Listen to Will’s Word on Facebook below.

But forgive me if I remain sceptical and it's not just this Coalition Government's fault, previous governments have spoken of doing something like this and it's never eventuated.

Meanwhile, the supermarket providers that we currently have continue to make great profit.

The time for change was yesterday.

So let's just hope this isn't yet another Government plan that fizzles out before it even gets off the ground.

That's Will's Word.
