Will's Word: Why are charter schools still so controversial in NZ?

Pacific Mornings host William Terites ask what all the fuss is about when it comes to charter schools

More state and state-integrated schools are looking at converting to charter status.

I can already hear the unions getting nervous about it.

But I actually think this is a good thing.

It perhaps shows schools and communities want options. They’re saying the current system doesn’t work for everyone. And they want to try something different.

That shouldn’t be controversial.

Not every child learns the same. Not every family is the same. So why do we expect one system to work for all? It just doesn’t.

Listen to Will's Word below.

And no, this shouldn't be about replacing state schools. To me, charter schools are about adding choice. Giving parents the ability to decide what’s best for their kids.

And at the end of the day, parents know their children better than anyone.

We’ve already seen examples of this working. Take the Pasifika Girls charter school that recently opened its doors. It’s built for students who might not feel supported in a traditional setting.

And if that works? If it lifts outcomes? That to me is a win.

I seriously don't think more choice will weaken the education system, and frankly, if more schools want to explore this path, I don’t see a problem.
