Shots fired at wrong venue ahead of funeral for slain Sydney gang figure Lorenzo Lemalu

A gunman opened fire on a venue mistakenly linked to the funeral of slain Sāmoan gangster Lorenzo Lemalu, less than a day before mourners gathered under heavy police presence to farewell him.

A gunman fired multiple shots at the wrong Sydney venue just hours before the funeral of slain Sāmoan gang figure Lorenzo Lemalu, in the latest sign of tensions surrounding his death.

Lemalu, 24, was shot dead in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on 21 May. Two Sāmoan men have since been arrested and charged over the alleged killing.

His remains were returned to Australia this week, and mourners gathered under heavy police presence at Lakemba Mosque in Sydney on Sunday to pay their final respects.

Many mourners shielded their faces from media gathered outside.

According to the ABC, police were called to Diamond Venues in Punchbowl, Sydney on Saturday afternoon (local time) after reports that shots had been fired at the property.

Video later shared on a gangland social media page allegedly showed a gunman firing several shots from the rear window of a vehicle into the building.

The venue had previously been advertised as the location of Lemalu's funeral before plans were changed and the service was instead held at Lakemba Mosque.

Lemalu's death has drawn attention on both sides of the Pacific with Australian authorities closely monitoring the fallout from the shooting.

The ABC reported that police sources were bracing for possible reprisal attacks following Lemalu's death.

Police believe Lemalu was the head of the so-called "Coconut Cartel", a gang alleged to have been involved in a long-running feud with the Alameddine crime family.

The name has attracted attention because it is based on a term historically used as a slur against Pasifika people.

Lemalu's body was returned to Australia last week ahead of the funeral service in Sydney's west.

Police have said that the investigation into both the Vietnam shooting and the Sydney gunfire incident remains ongoing.
