Niue, one of the smallest countries in the world, celebrates the New Year with “Takai,” a unique and vibrant tradition that fosters a community of spirit and joy in the Pacific island nation.

Takai is a festive occasion that brings locals and visitors together for fun and celebration within the first two weeks of the year.

Rooted in the Niuean tradition of sharing goodwill, Takai means “to go right around”.

What is Takai?

Traditionally, villagers would walk from one village to another, exchanging gifts and blessings for the New Year.

According to Niue Tourism, “Takai is an annual event specific to Niue, celebrating the New Year.

“Historically, villagers would walk from village to village sharing goodwill and gifts for a prosperous new year.”

Today, the custom has evolved into a lively, island-wide event where locals decorate their vehicles, regardless of their condition, and parade from village to village.

They hand out goodies such as lollies, drinks, and even humourous gifts like toilet paper while spreading love and joy.

Each village has a dedicated day for the Takai parade, during which they travel around the island.

Upon entering each village, the parade announces its arrival with honking horns, loud sirens, music, and other sounds, alerting villagers to join in the festivities.

Takai in modern times

While the heart of the celebration remains rooted in tradition, its contemporary version is undeniably wacky and fun.

“While the tradition still goes on to this day, modern celebrations are a lot wackier,” says the Niue Pocket Guide.

People can be seen sitting in car windows, on bonnets, and in the back of vehicles, waving enthusiastically to onlookers, blaring music, and tossing sweets to delighted children lining the roads.

As one of the year's biggest celebrations, Niuean festivities also include community feasts and the enjoyment of a drink or two.

It’s a time for bonding, laughter, and embracing the New Year with positivity and togetherness.
