Solomon Islands clinch OFC Futsal Men’s Cup with emphatic win over scoreless Tuvalu

The Kurukuru delivered a ruthless 7-0 performance in Suva, showcasing their trademark speed and precision while Tuvalu bowed out with pride after their long-awaited return to the tournament.

The Solomon Islands Kurukuru have been crowned champions of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Futsal Men’s Cup 2025 after sweeping aside Tuvalu 7-0 in Suva.

With the title on the line, the Kurukuru produced a commanding display at Vodafone Arena on Wednesday, confirming their dominance in Oceania futsal.

A win was required to secure the trophy, and the defending champions responded in style, overwhelming a spirited Tuvalu side that needed just a draw to deny them.

Kurukuru captain Charlie Otainao and forward Calvin Do’oro led from the front, combining for the opening two goals to set the tone early.

Despite brave defending and standout saves from Tuvalu goalkeeper Katepu Iosua, the Solomon Islands’ relentless pressure proved decisive.

After the break, three quick-fire goals crushed Tuvalu’s resistance before Jayson Timi added to the tally, sealing a statement victory for coach Dickson Kadau’s squad.

Futsal is a fast-paced, five-a-side version of football (soccer) played indoors on a hard court, using a smaller, low-rebound ball. The name comes from the Spanish "fútbol sala" or Portuguese "futebol de salão" (indoor football). It emphasises creativity, quick decision-making, and technical skill due to the smaller playing area and ball, with unlimited substitutions.

For the Solomon Islands, the win marks another proud chapter in their storied futsal history.

For Tuvalu, returning to the OFC stage after 14 years, the campaign ended in defeat but was capped by a spirited showing in the final against the champions.

New Zealand finished second while Fiji clinched third spot. The Kiwis defeated Vanuatu 3-1 earlier and needed Tuvalu to hold the Solomon Islands to a draw to secure the title.
