Pacific football eyes historic World Cup haul as Fiji and New Zealand set up OFC U16 final

Pacific football is guaranteed at least one team at next year's FIFA Under-17 World Cup, and another could soon join them.

Fiji booked their place at the 2027 tournament in Qatar after edging Solomon Islands 4-2 on penalties in a tense Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Under-16 Championship semi-final on Wednesday.

The result also set up a mouth-watering final against defending champions New Zealand, who beat hosts Papua New Guinea 3-0 later in the day to continue their pursuit of an 11th straight title.

While Fiji and New Zealand can now focus on Saturday's championship decider, PNG and Solomon Islands still have everything to play for.

The two sides will meet in the third-place play-off, with the winner claiming Oceania's final place at the FIFA U17 World Cup.

Fiji earned qualification the hard way after a gripping 90-minute battle with Solomon Islands finished scoreless.

Goalkeeper Kirikiti Biu proved the hero in the penalty shoot-out, making two crucial saves before Isoa Baselala converted the winning spot kick to seal a 4-2 victory.

The achievement sends Fiji to a third consecutive FIFA U17 World Cup and only their third OFC U16 Championship final.

New Zealand also had to work for their place in the final after Papua New Guinea frustrated the Junior All Whites throughout the first half.

The breakthrough finally came five minutes after the restart when a dangerous cross from Davi Valle Dos Santos was turned into his own net by PNG defender Bomecge Basanuc.

Cruz Pietersen then took centre stage, scoring twice to wrap up a 3-0 victory and send New Zealand into another regional final.

Saturday's title clash promises to be one of the biggest matches of the tournament.

New Zealand will be chasing an 11th consecutive OFC U16 crown while Fiji will be looking to lift the title for only the second time and cap another memorable World Cup qualifying campaign.

Earlier on Thursday, Vanuatu ended their tournament on a high, defeating Sāmoa 7-1 in the seventh-place play-off.

Rohan Masauvakalo scored four goals, Franso Shem added a double and Nelson Tawia also found the net as Vanuatu claimed their first victory of the championship in emphatic fashion.

For Sāmoa, the tournament ended with an eighth-place finish after Te Koha Gabriel Schick scored their only goal of the match.

All eyes now turn to Saturday in Port Moresby where one trophy and one remaining World Cup place are still up for grabs.
