South Melbourne hit eight, Auckland win derby as race for top four blown wide open

A day of rescheduled drama in Fiji saw Auckland FC complete a derby double while South Melbourne FC sent a brutal warning ahead of the Leaders Group with an 8-1 demolition of Tahiti United.

Auckland FC and South Melbourne FC made the loudest noise on a dramatic Tuesday during the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Pro League in Ba, Fiji.

One team have sealed local bragging rights and the other is shaking up the race for the top four in emphatic style.

In the New Zealand North v South Island derby, Auckland FC claimed a 3-1 win over South Island United to complete a clean sweep of the rivalry this season. But it was far from comfortable early on.

South Island United started fast and should have led. Oscar Mason was forced into two sharp saves, first denying Jaylen Rodwell from a free kick and then producing a stunning one-handed stop to keep out Ry McLeod from close range.

Those missed chances proved costly. A defensive mix-up gifted Auckland the opener in the 28th minute, with Oscar Faulds pouncing on a long ball and finishing one-on-one.

Auckland tightened their grip just after the break in fortunate fashion. Liam Gillion cut inside and struck the post, only for the ball to bounce off goalkeeper Steven Van Dijk and into the net.

South Island United kept pushing and pulled one back in the 76th minute through David Yoo, who turned in from a corner to give them hope. But just as the game tilted, another error ended their comeback.

Captain Christian Gray was caught in possession and Isa Prins punished it with a composed chip to seal the 3-1 win.

The result strengthens Auckland’s push at the top end while South Island United are left waiting nervously, knowing their place in the Leaders Group is no longer secure.

If that result applied pressure, South Melbourne FC blew the race wide open altogether in the other match played on Tuesday.

The Australian club delivered the biggest statement of the season with an 8-1 thrashing of Tahiti United. The result could reshape the competition heading into the split.

Tahiti United went into the match knowing a win would send them into the top four. Instead, their hopes collapsed within 15 minutes.

James Lackay struck in the fourth minute with a sharp finish before Jordan Swibel added a second soon after. From there, the game ran away quickly.

Aaron Cocks made it three, Tommy Giannakopoulos added a fourth, and Andrew Mesourouni’s solo goal summed up the gulf between the sides. By half-time, it was already 6-0.

Tahiti United briefly steadied after the break with substitute Germain Haewegene scoring a consolation. But it did little to slow South Melbourne.

Ishveer Singh added a seventh for South Melbourne and Che Gorr Burchmore completed the rout at 8-1.

The result not only marks the biggest win of the season but it sends a clear message ahead of the Leaders Group clash in Auckland next month.

For teams across the Pacific, the picture is now clearer and far more dangerous. Auckland FC have momentum, South Melbourne FC have firepower, and the battle for the title is wide open.
