Fiji crush Tonga 74-26 to stay unbeaten in men’s netball series

The Fijians have extended their winning run at the Men’s Invitational Series as both sides build towards the inaugural 2028 World Cup.

Fiji’s men’s netball team have continued their strong run at the Men’s Invitational Series 2026, recording another dominant win over Tonga in Suva.

The Fijians defeated the Tongans 74-26 in their final match at the Vodafone Arena on Wednesday, adding to an unbeaten series that also included a 79-18 win earlier in the competition.

Fiji head coach Jioweli Vakamoce said they had been working through early mistakes and focusing on improving combinations as the tournament progressed.

He said the squad reviewed their opening performance and identified areas that needed tightening.

“We have analysed and talked about what we did on the first day because the points are less than what we always give Tonga.

"We have retouched everything again from yesterday and the team have executed well in the court,” he said.

Vakamoce said maintaining focus under pressure remained one of the key challenges for his players.

“The issue is we need players to have that in their mind. When you are on court there are emotions, reactions, and we need to keep training them to focus on what we are implementing.”

He said the side was continuing to build cohesion as new tactical structures were introduced.

“I think we are getting there. After our training sessions before the match, we are always ready, but we will only know the outcome when we take the court.”

He also thanked supporters who turned out in wet conditions to back the team.

Tonga’s team, meanwhile, said the three-day series had been a valuable learning experience as they build towards future international competition.

In a statement, Tonga Netball thanked Netball Fiji and the Fiji men’s team for their hospitality and support during the series.

The organisation said the tournament had provided important lessons both on and off the court, as the team continues developing its pathway towards the 2028 Men’s Netball World Cup.

It also acknowledged the support of the government, sponsors and partners, as well as families and friends.

Tonga Netball said the tour marked the beginning of a longer journey for the team.

“Malō ‘aupito mo e loto hounga’ia mo’oni,” the statement said. “We build and grow from here."

The inaugural Men's Netball World Cup is set for 2028, with the host city and exact dates yet to be confirmed as World Netball continues its bidding and selection process.

Australia is the reigning champion of the international men's game, having won the most recent Men's Fast5 Netball World Series.
