The Blues made the most of a fast start at Eden Park to secure a convincing Super Rugby Pacific win over the Crusaders.

The Crusaders started their fourth round match without star fullback Will Jordan, but they opened the scoring early with a penalty to take a 3–0 lead.

The Blues responded quickly when powerhouse winger Caleb Clarke crashed over in the corner. The conversion was successful and the Blues jumped ahead 7–3.

The Crusaders then surged up the middle with some nice interplay and looked certain to score, but a try was disallowed. To make matters worse, Crusaders forward Dominic Gardiner was shown a yellow card.

The Blues made the extra man count immediately. Clarke struck again, powering over for his second try, extending the lead to 12–3.

The Blues kept the pressure on with powerful running and attacking rugby. A well-placed cross-field kick found flying winger Cole Forbes, who finished brilliantly to push the score to 19–3.

The Crusaders looked nothing like the side that beat the Chiefs last week, struggling with handling errors and a lack of momentum.

There was a moment of excitement when Blues winger Mark Telea attempted a chip-and-chase, but it didn’t come off.

The Crusaders slowly worked their way back into the match with consecutive penalties and better territory. Unfortunately, lock Jamie Hannah was forced off with injury, leading to the debut of Will Tucker.

Finally the Crusaders got their reward. From a lineout drive, the maul rolled forward and hooker Codie Taylor powered over for a try, closing the gap to 19–8.

The Crusaders kept pushing and momentum swung their way. First five Rivez Reihana finished off a strong attacking movement to bring the score to 19–13.

The Crusaders finished the half with a wet sail, while the Blues headed to the sheds wondering how their dominant start slipped away.

The second half got underway at Eden Park, with the Blues immediately showing attacking intent.

Spreading the ball wide with confidence, the Blues looked dangerous and Beauden Barrett came close to crossing the line after a slick attacking movement.

Winger Caleb Clarke returned from the sin bin after being penalised for illegally batting the ball down.

It didn’t take long for him to make an impact. With smooth hands across the backline, Clarke finished in the corner to complete a brilliant hat-trick, extending the Blues’ lead to 26–13.

Both teams then entered a physical arm wrestle for possession as changes were made and the intensity lifted with 20 minutes remaining.

The Crusaders tried to build pressure, helped by Blues ill-discipline, with the penalty count heavily favouring the visitors 11–2.

Injury concerns emerged for the Blues when midfielder Peter Ahki fell awkwardly and left the field with what appeared to be an ankle injury.

Despite the Crusaders pushing hard for a comeback, the Blues absorbed the pressure. After a chaotic passage of play where the ball spilled loose through several phases, Beauden Barrett calmly slotted a penalty to extend the lead to 29–13.

That proved to be the final blow. The Blues closed out a convincing victory, while the Crusaders never truly recovered after the home side’s dominant start.

After the match, the Blues honoured captain Dalton Papali’i with a haka during a delayed presentation marking his 100th Super Rugby appearance.
