Bula FC fall short to Auckland FC as OFC finals race tightens

Bula FC were unable to convert their chances in a 2-0 loss to Auckland FC, leaving their finals hopes hanging in the balance.

Bula FC’s push for a strong finish in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Pro League took a hit after a 2-0 loss to Auckland FC in round six, putting pressure on their place in the play-off race.

In overcast conditions, Bula showed defensive discipline but struggled to make their chances count in front of the goal as the home side took control at key moments.

Bula FC defender Scott Wara said it summed up a difficult afternoon for the visitors.

“Today just wasn’t our day,” Wara told PMN News. "Not the result we were after but a few positives to take from it…credit to the boys… we tried our hardest.”

Bula FC spent much of the first half under pressure although they did create one clear chance that was denied by Auckland goalkeeper Oscar Mason.

Despite going into the break behind, Bula returned with more intent in the second half.

Wara said the side tried to follow head coach Stephane Auvray’s message to “not go into our shells” while staying composed under pressure.

Auckland continued to threaten but were also wasteful at times, missing two penalty opportunities and hitting the crossbar as Bula’s defence held firm.

Auckland eventually doubled their lead through Everton O’Leary, who finished from inside the penalty box in the 37th minute.

The visitors continued to push in the second half, with Thomas Dunn also going close but they were unable to find a breakthrough.

Wara said Bula could only accept the outcome. “That’s just football.”

With one game remaining in the leaders category against South Melbourne on Tuesday, 3pm (NZT), Bula FC will need results elsewhere and a strong finish to avoid a fourth-place finish.

Auckland FC’s performance hands them their first win of the round, before they face South Island United after Bula FC at Eden Park, 7pm.
