On Christmas Eve, Tonga will select a new prime minister, and commentator Melino Maka says the contest is between two candidates.
As Tonga prepares to elect a new prime minister following the resignation of Hu'akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni amidst a Vote of No Confidence filed by Dr Aisake Eke and 10 other MPs, the leadership race has gained momentum.
On Friday, 20 December 2024, the Office of the Lord Speaker of the Legislative Assembly received the first written nomination for Prime Minister Designate.
The nominee’s identity will be revealed on Tuesday, 24 December 2024, during a meeting of the Elected Representatives. The nomination period remains open until 4:30 pm on Monday, 23 December 2024.
Sources indicate that Dr Aisake Eke is the first nominee and a frontrunner for the position.
While the government side is expected to nominate Viliami Latu on Monday, speculation about Tevita Puloka’s candidacy has been dismissed, as he appears to have withdrawn from contention. If the projections are accurate, Dr Eke may become Tonga’s next Prime Minister, serving until the next election in November 2025.
Dr Eke’s candidacy offers a significant opportunity for Tonga to embrace transformative leadership during a period of profound change. The nation faces significant political and economic challenges, but it also stands on the cusp of renewal.
With his experience, academic achievements, and commitment to servant leadership, Dr Eke is well-positioned to guide Tonga toward a future marked by resilience and prosperity.
Dr Eke’s credentials highlight a blend of academic rigour and practical leadership.
In 2013, he earned a PhD from the University of Southern Queensland, focusing on enhancing public service quality in Tonga. This academic foundation underpins his governance philosophy, which emphasises institutional integrity, accountability, and the welfare of the populace.

His career spans key roles, including Secretary for Finance, Minister of Finance, and MP for Tongatapu 5. Known for his prudent financial management and dedication to public interest, Dr Eke has consistently prioritised Tonga’s long-term well-being.
His opposition to self-serving parliamentary measures further underscores his commitment to principled leadership. As a devout Christian, Dr Eke’s leadership is deeply rooted in servant leadership principles: prioritising the people’s needs, listening with humility, and striving for justice.
His faith-driven approach informs his decisions, emphasising integrity, compassion, and stewardship. For Dr Eke, leadership is not merely a position of authority but a calling to serve with wisdom and grace.
While Dr Eke’s qualifications and leadership style inspire confidence, observers have highlighted potential challenges.
His passive and non-confrontational demeanour, while fostering collaboration, could be perceived as a disadvantage in Tonga’s politically charged environment. Effective leadership requires decisiveness and the ability to address challenges head-on.
To excel as Prime Minister, Dr Eke must demonstrate a readiness to lead boldly. Building a competent and empowered team will be crucial to breaking the cycle of inefficiency that has hindered previous administrations.

Avoiding micromanagement - a common issue in Tonga’s political leadership - will allow him to focus on strategic priorities while fostering accountability and streamlined decision-making.
The election of the next Prime Minister is more than a decision about leadership; it is a defining moment for Tonga’s future.
Dr Eke’s extensive experience, academic grounding, and faith-driven leadership offer a strong foundation for addressing the nation’s challenges and seizing opportunities for growth.
By embracing a leadership style that balances collaboration with decisiveness, Dr Eke has the potential to set a new standard for governance.
His vision for accountability, resilience, and unity can help Tonga navigate this critical juncture and emerge stronger, more prosperous, and more united.
As the nation awaits the reveal of the Prime Minister Designate, Dr Eke’s candidacy represents not just hope but the possibility of tangible progress.
His leadership could mark the beginning of a transformative era, one where challenges are met with confidence and opportunities are harnessed with clarity and purpose.
