Tropical Cyclone Rae: Schools close as Fiji remains on high alert

The authorities have issued multiple warnings nationwide, urging residents to prepare for damaging winds, flooding, and dangerous seas.

Fiji is preparing for the impact of Tropical Cyclone Rae, which has already brought strong winds and heavy rainfall to the region.

The category two storm is expected to intensify further by Tuesday. Eighteen evacuation centres have been activated in the Northern Division - 12 schools, three community halls, and three private residences are being used as temporary shelters.

According to a special weather bulletin issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service at 5pm local time on Monday, Tropical Cyclone Rae is moving south-southwest towards the southern Lau Group.

The authorities have issued multiple warnings across the country, a storm threat for the Lau Group, a gale warning for parts of Vanua Levu, a strong wind warning for northeastern Viti Levu, and a heavy rain warning for the entire Fiji group.

Rae was located 90km east-northeast of Moala and 50km south of Cicia islands on Monday afternoon.

By then, it was packing winds of 95km/h with gusts reaching 130km/h.

TC Rae is expected to intensify overnight, with wind speeds reaching 110km/h and gusts up to 155km/h by Tuesday morning.

The Fiji Meteorological Service reports that the cyclone is moving at a speed of 17km/h and is anticipated to pass south of Ono-i-Lau by early Tuesday.

The authorities are urging residents in affected areas to prepare for damaging winds, flooding, and rough seas.

Kabara Island in the Lau Group has been hit with heavy rain and strong winds since the weekend.

Residents are advised to secure loose objects, stay indoors during the storm, and avoid unnecessary travel. Those in flood-prone areas should be ready for possible evacuations.

Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) encourages the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and to follow emergency instructions as conditions evolve.

Schools close

Schools in the Lau Group, Lomaiviti, and Vanua Levu were closed on Monday following an announcement by Fiji’s Ministry of Education on Sunday.

This decision was made for the safety of students and staff due to the uncertain weather conditions.

“All teachers are asked to remain vigilant and prioritise the safety of their students, colleagues, and families during this time.

“The ministry will keep all students, teachers, parents, and guardians updated through press releases via mainstream media and the official page for the Ministry of Education and the Fiji Government,” according to a statement.
