Luxon dives into the universal vs targeted healthcare debate

Pacific Mornings' host William Terite asks what is the right balance when it comes to funding healthcare.

This is transcript from Will's Word on September 11, 2024.

Now it’s time for Will’s Word…

The debate over Hawke's Bay health professionals prioritising young Māori and Pasifika people has caused a stir after Prime Minister Christopher Luxon labelled it "out of line".

Which begs the question: should we focus on universal access or target specific groups?

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon argues that healthcare should be based on overall need, not ethnicity. He believes that resources should be allocated to individuals based on their health needs rather than their background.

On the other hand, some health professionals argue that focusing on Māori and Pasifika youth is necessary because these groups face unique health challenges and barriers.

Labour MP Cushla Tangaere Manuel supports this targeted approach, emphasising that it’s about correcting historical disadvantages and ensuring fair access to healthcare.

Health Minister Shane Reti insists that the government’s policy should focus on general needs first, and address specific vulnerabilities afterwards. This approach aims to distribute resources broadly but may not fully address the specific challenges faced by certain communities.

I suppose finding a balance between universal and targeted care is crucial.

While universal access aims to be fair to everyone, targeted interventions are sometimes needed to address particular issues and ensure that all groups receive the support they need.
