This is a transcript of Will's Word from Friday, 30 August.

Kiingi Tuheitia has passed away, and his death is a deep loss for the Kiingitanga and all of Aotearoa.

Born in Huntly in April 1955, he became the Māori King in 2006, following his mother’s death.

During his 18-year reign, Kiingi Tuheitia worked hard to connect Māori culture with the wider community, despite his health challenges.

His recent passing comes shortly after celebrating 18 years as king.

Kiingi Tuheitia did a remarkable job of unifying our people, particularly in the past year, to rise up and call for unity against the coalition Government’s stance on Māori issues.

He will be remembered for his dedication to his people and his role in preserving Māori traditions.

As we mourn his death, I reflect on his legacy of leadership and unity.

May he rest in peace.

That’s Will’s Word.
