Tupou Ta'eiloa signs two-year deal with Moana Pasifika

The 21-year-old rising star from Tonga has committed to the 2026 and 2027 Super Rugby seasons.

Moana Pasifika's rookie of the year, Semisi Tupou Ta'eiloa, will continue playing for the team during the 2026 and 2027 Super Rugby Pacific seasons.

The 21-year-old loose forward from Tonga signed a new contract with Moana.

After starting as a training player, Tupou Ta'eiloa had an impressive season this year, standing out by leading the league with 205 carries. His strong performances helped him become a regular starter for the team.

He says the team culture is one of the best aspects of being Moana Pasifika and is grateful for the strong support from fans.

"Securing my first Super Rugby contract means a lot. It's a dream come true not only for me but for my family," Tupou Ta'eiloa says.

"Some highlights for me being with Moana Pasifika have to be the team culture, it's like a family, and we have the best fans."

Known for his powerful playing style, Tupou Ta'eiloa was also recognised as Moana Pasifika's Best Defensive Player.

He grew up in Māngere, South Auckland, then moved to Dunedin for school, where he played for Otago Boys High School's First XV. In 2023, he began playing for the Southland Stags in the National Provincial Championship.

After a standout season with Southland in 2024, Tupou Ta'eiloahe got to train with Moana Pasifika.

He worked hard and impressed the team. He even scored a try in his debut against the Western Force in the first match of the season.

He earned management's trust through his high work rate and debuted against the Force in Round One.

Over the season, he played 13 games, had the most extended playing time on the team with 943 minutes, and scored seven tries, showing his talent and determination.

Head coach Fa'alogo Tana Umaga is happy about Ta'eiloa's new contract, highlighting his unique skills and dedication.

He adds that Tupou Ta'eiloa's dedication earned him his spot on the team through hard work and physical play.

"We're very happy to have Semisi back with us for another two years," Umaga says. "He's a rare talent with amazing ambition and tenacity to get to where he is now.

"He impressed us with the way he came in and earned his spot on the team, the physicality he plays with, and his love for this team. The future is bright for Semisi, and we look forward to continuing to watch him grow."

Tupou Ta'eiloa has made a significant impact on the eve of the competition.

With a bright future ahead, he will remain a vital part of Moana Pasifika's journey.
