Puaikura power into Oceania stage with dominant home win

The Cook Islands champions have sealed an OFC Women’s Champions League 2026 spot after a confident display at home.

Puaikura FC from the Cook Islands are heading to the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Women’s Champions League 2026 after a strong 3-0 win over PanSa FC from American Sāmoa in Rarotonga on Saturday.

Backed by their home crowd at the CIFA Academy, Puaikura made it two wins from two matches in the qualifying tournament.

The Cook Islands' champions have now locked in the only spot available and confirmed their place on Oceania’s biggest stage.

They came into the match full of confidence after a 2-0 win over Nukuhetulu FC from Tonga and carried that momentum straight into this decisive clash.

Two first-half goals set the tone early and from there, they never really looked in trouble.

The match had its flashpoint in the 23rd minute when tempers boiled over. A scuffle off the ball led to three red cards: Tearoa Rouru for Puaikura and Olea Tofaeono along with PanSa captain Angela Ah Fook.

Despite being reduced, PanSa were left with just nine players on the field, giving Puaikura the edge.

The hosts made that advantage count almost immediately. Just three minutes later, Penina Katuke timed her run perfectly to meet a free-kick over the top of the defence and open the scoring.

Puaikura kept pushing and were rewarded again just before half-time. Victoria Fatiaki spotted goalkeeper Rayxena Foma’i off her line and calmly doubled the lead, putting the home side firmly in control heading into the break.

To their credit, PanSa showed real fight in the second half despite their disadvantage.

They held Puaikura out for long periods and nearly kept the score down. Foma’i produced a strong save to tip Te Upoko Tuariki’s long-range effort onto the crossbar before denying Katuke on the rebound.

But the pressure eventually told. In the 79th minute, Kaylenna Kermoda caught Foma’i off her line for the second time in the match and sealed the match, which sparked celebrations among the home fans.

The win means Puaikura FC now turn their focus to June’s tournament in the Solomon Islands where they will face some of the region’s top sides.

They have been drawn in Group B alongside two-time defending champions Auckland United FC and Drehu Athletico Club.

For PanSa FC, attention shifts to their final match of the qualifying tournament where they will look to finish on a positive note against Nukuhetulu FC.

For Puaikura, though, this is a moment to enjoy. A home campaign done right and a chance to represent the Cook Islands on a much bigger stage.
