PNG move two wins closer to FIFA U20 World Cup dream

The Young Kapuls have booked their place at the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship in Sāmoa, with a berth at the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup on the line.

Papua New Guinea's (PNG) are now one step closer to the biggest stage in world youth football.

The Young Kapuls have secured their place at the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Under-19 Men's Championship in Samoa in September.

This is after a commanding 5-1 win over Cook Islands in Rarotonga on Saturday, which keeps alive their hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA U20 World Cup.

The eight-team tournament in Apia will decide Oceania’s two representatives at the World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, with the two finalists earning qualification.

Knowing a draw would have been enough to advance, PNG instead produced their most convincing performance of the qualifying campaign.

Ruel Api got the Young Kapuls off to the perfect start, reacting quickest outside the penalty area before firing home from long range.

The early goal settled PNG, who quickly took control through the attacking trio of David Tita, Benjamin Kila and captain Nalau Moses.

Their second goal came after Tita brought down a long pass from Bomecge Basananuc and drove forward before delivering a low cross for Moses to finish.

Cook Islands continued to create chances before halftime and threatened from several set-pieces.

Maui Denny's free-kick found Kima Webb, whose header drifted just over the crossbar, while further set-piece deliveries and long-range efforts kept PNG's defence alert.

But PNG held firm to take a two-goal advantage into the break.

The visitors extended their lead soon after the restart when Basananuc again turned provider, sending Tita through on goal.

The forward made no mistake, scoring his fourth goal of the qualifying tournament.

The hosts briefly gave their supporters hope when Charlie Noovao-Martin met a curling delivery from Denny and headed home to cut the deficit.

But PNG quickly shut down any thoughts of a Cook Islands comeback.

John Millis broke into the penalty area before substitute Benjamin Sumabru finished the move, and Sumabru later set up Jaru Eron for the fifth goal as the Young Kapuls completed an emphatic victory.

Attention now turns to Sāmoa where PNG will face New Caledonia, the hosts and Solomon Islands in Group A of the OFC U19 Championship. Defending champions New Zealand headline Group B alongside Tahiti, Fiji and Vanuatu.

For the Young Kapuls, the equation is now simple: reach the final and a place at the FIFA U20 World Cup awaits.
