Clean slate, high stakes as OFC Pro League splits in two groups

The points reset to zero as Pacific’s finest descend on Auckland where a points reset means every club is now just three wins away from winning the title.

The 2026 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Pro League title race has been blown wide open as the competition moves to Auckland with a points reset, which gives every Pacific club a fresh shot at glory.

After 56 matches of the regular season, the competition has been split into leaders and challengers with every match carrying knockout-level pressure as the race resets on equal footing.

While the format has shifted, the stakes have also been raised. Just one Pacific club has cracked the top four ‘Leaders’ bracket: Fiji’s Bula FC sit alongside Auckland FC (1), South Island United (3), and South Melbourne FC (4).

But the dream is far from over for the rest of the region.

Under this unique format, the top team from the ‘challengers’ bracket of Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) Hekari FC, Solomon Islands’ Solomon Kings FC, Tahiti United, and Vanuatu United FC will fight their way into a do-or-die playoff against the fourth-placed leader for a semi-final spot.

Bula flying the Pacific flag

Bula FC open the leaders stage on Wednesday, 6 May at Go Media Stadium, taking on South Island United at 3pm (NZT).

They arrive on a high after a historic 2-1 win over Auckland FC in round five, and a return to Auckland is expected to feel like a home fixture, backed by a strong Fijian community in New Zealand.

But with the reset wiping that historic result clean, head coach Stephane Auvray is keeping expectations measured.

“Being in the leaders group, we are conscious that we are not the favourites,” Auvray told OFC Media. “As such, we have nothing to lose. Our season is already a positive one and making it to the last rounds would be the cherry on the cake.”

Veteran forward Roy Krishna remains the anchor. With three goals so far, his experience and composure will be vital against a South Island United side that scraped into the top four with two wins, two losses and a draw.

Later on Wednesday, Auckland FC face South Melbourne FC at 7pm, with both sides backing up from a high-tempo A-League semi-final weekend.

Challengers chasing survival

While Bula carry the weight of the top bracket, the challengers division is a Pacific powerhouse battle.

Solomon Kings, who narrowly missed the top four on points differential, open against Tahiti United at 3pm at Eden Park.

Head coach Ben Cahn believes his group can “beat any team,” and like Fiji, the Solomon Islands side can expect strong backing from their community in the stands.

The late match features Vanuatu United and Hekari FC at 7pm. Both sides are looking to overturn difficult regular seasons and the points reset is exactly the lifeline they needed.

While the teams chase the trophy, Vanuatu’s Alex Saniel is hunting for personal history. Saniel is currently tied at the top of the Golden Boot standings with seven goals.

While he is chasing down contenders from Auckland and Melbourne for the award, his primary focus remains keeping Vanuatu’s season alive.

Hekari forward Rex Naime also looms as a threat, matching Krishna’s three goals and looking to spark a late-season surge for the PNG club.
