New Zealand join PNG, Fiji and New Caledonia in OFC Men's Under-16 Championship finals

With a chance to secure spots in the 2026 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, teams are set to battle it out after intense pool matches saw New Zealand and Fiji maintain unbeaten streaks.

The stage is set for the semi-finals of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Under-16 Men's Championship held in the Solomon Islands.

This follows the end of pool matches played on the weekend. Defending champions New Zealand thrashed the hosts 8-0 in Honiara, while Fiji proved too strong for Papua New Guinea, winning 2-0, and New Caledonia dominated Sāmoa 5-0.

New Zealand will now face Group A runners-up Papua New Guinea in Wednesday’s semi-finals, while Fiji, winners of Group A, take on New Caledonia.

The top three finishers in Honiara will qualify for the 2026 FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Qatar.

NZ vs Solomon Islands

New Zealand took control early on, scoring five goals in the first half.

The scoring started in the 25th minute with a stunning long-range shot by John Woldegiorgis, followed by goals from captain Ethan Dyer, Matias Nunez, and more, leaving the score at 5-0 by halftime.

The second half continued in a similar fashion, with the Kiwis adding three more goals to finish the game at 8-0.

The Solomon Islands, needing a win to progress in the tournament, struggled to create scoring opportunities but had a near-miss when Junior Sese hit the post late in the game.

New Caledonia vs Sāmoa

New Caledonia secured their place in the semi-finals with a convincing 5-0 win over Sāmoa.

After a tough start, New Caledonia found their rhythm, with Darryl Hmaloko scoring the first goal halfway through the first half.

Despite a missed penalty, they maintained their momentum, with Alexandre Boere scoring a stunning long-range goal.

They finished strong with two more goals, sealing their victory and advancing to the next round.

Fiji vs PNG

Fiji also had a solid performance in their final pool match, defeating Papua New Guinea 2-0 with their captain, Maikah Dau, scoring both goals.

Dau's first goal came from a beautifully curled free-kick, giving Fiji the lead. Despite efforts from Papua New Guinea to equalise, they couldn’t find the net.

In the closing minutes, Fiji secured their win with another goal from Dau after a penalty was awarded.

Tahiti vs Cook Islands

Tahiti achieved a decisive 5-0 victory over the Cook Islands in their final pool play match, with Aronui and Aroarii Bennett each scoring two goals.

Tahiti quickly took a three-goal lead within the first 25 minutes, with Aronui's early goal followed by Aroarii's contributions.

A penalty from Aroarii and a strike from Tiaitau Vauquelin added to their tally.

Despite a better performance than their previous 1-6 defeat to Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands were eliminated from semi-final contention and will now play Sāmoa for seventh and eighth place on Thursday, while Tahiti will face the Solomons for fifth and sixth.

Wednesday's semifinal losers will compete in the third- and fourth-place match on Saturday, which will be followed by the grand final.
