Auckland Rugby League interim CEO Duane Mann speaks about his goals in boosting the sport's trajectory from the club level upwards.
Auckland Rugby League’s new leader says strengthening relationships with the clubs is crucial to the game’s growing popularity.
After more than 10 years working away from the sport, former Kiwis and Tonga captain Duane Mann took on the role of interim CEO of Auckland Rugby League earlier this month.
“If our clubs are strong, our games are strong," he said.
“Aucklanders love rugby league, so that's our focus, but being great off the field is important as well. There’s no silver bullet in addressing that.”
Mann assumed the role of interim CEO in early December after a leadership change in the organisation.
He said supporting the clubs will be a key focus of his leadership.
“We’ve got clubs that really want to move forward, and for the clubs, that’s the real focus. As Auckland Rugby League, how can we better support and serve the clubs?
Mann believes that strong connections and competitive relationships have been vital in keeping the game robust in Auckland.
“But it’s also about enjoying it and enjoying loving what you do with passion.”
This year, Auckland Rugby League has 12,500 registered players across the various grades, which Mann considers a significant achievement.
He said this was a "real win" and that the team exceeded their goal by 1000 players.
“It’s really about relationships and connections. Our population is largely Māori and Pasifika, and innately, that’s what we do so well.
“We're a team sport, and we're in this together.”
His father, Don Mann Sr, was among those who were instrumental in establishing the Mate Ma’a Tonga team and has been inducted into the ARL Hall of Fame.
“Our family’s a rugby league family. It’s wonderful to always have the support, mentorship, a clip around the ear,” he joked.
