Blues women ready for ‘real battle’ to claim first championship

The Blues women’s team will face the Chiefs Manawa this weekend in the Super Rugby Aupiki final.

“I think it’s gonna be a tough one.”

That’s Blues scrum coach Census Johnson ahead of this weekend's Super Rugby Aupiki final.

“I think the Chiefs (Manawa) have been the benchmark in the past two to three years of the competition, so heading into this final I think we’ve prepared well,” he adds.

Eden Park will host the Super Rugby Aupiki final for the first time, as the Blues face the competition's inaugural champions, the Chiefs Manawa.

Both sides have had standout seasons, with the Blues edging the Chiefs in their last match, securing a top of the table spot and a home final, which Johnson says is huge for the team.

“Anytime you play at Eden Park, you’re in the holy grail of rugby. The history behind Eden Park and it being the first final for the women - it’s huge for the game.”

Speaking with Blues players Liana Mikaele-Tu’u and Chryss Viliko, they say it’s going to take a huge effort to topple the Chiefs.

“I think it’s going to be a real battle of the forwards. We know the quality forwards they have, and for us is being very direct from the get go,” says Lina Mikaele-Tu’u who plays in her first final for the franchise.

“It’s going to be a tough game, and I imagine my body will be sore afterwards, but that’s what finals footy is for,” she adds.

Blues prop Chryss Viliko says the team have been focusing on their strengths ahead of the battle.

“We want to focus on our strengths, our core roles and what we can bring to the team and our superpowers this week.”

And Pacifc rugby fans will be particularly spoilt for choice given the number of athletes with Pasifika heritage on show, which Census Johnson says is hugely important for the game.

“We’ve got a really high number of [Pacific] representation around the world, and by having these competitions we’re able to showcase those talents.

“You have a look at the league, at the rugby, we’re littered with talent. And we want to nurture those talents to showcase.”
