With the Prime Minister set to deliver his State of the Nation speech today, Pacific Mornings host William Terite questions who the Government’s focus is really serving.
Good luck to Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, who’s set to deliver his State of the Nation address today.
It’s widely expected he’ll focus on inflation, lifting education outcomes, on cutting red tape and getting the economy moving again.
All stuff we’ve heard before.
But I suppose what I want to hear from the PM is how sticking with the status quo is actually good for New Zealand, and by extension, good for Pacific communities.
Because for many Pacific families, the status quo has meant falling behind, not getting ahead.
The cost of living continues to bite, families are fleeing to Australia in search of a better life.
Watch Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's State of the Nation speech below.
So when leaders talk about stability and continuity, it can sound reassuring.
But stability for whom? Continuity of what?
Luxon has spoken a lot about aspiration and personal responsibility. Those ideas resonate with many people, myself included.
But aspiration only works when the system gives everyone a fair shot to succeed.
So today, I’m less interested in hearing that things are getting back on track, and more interested in hearing whose track we’re actually on.
