Operation Talisman Sabre: Fiji strengthens defence with historic military exercises

The Australian government says it is committed to working and training alongside its Pacific partners to support a peaceful, secure, and prosperous region.

A group of Fijian soldiers are in Australia for the next five months as part of a defence partnership between the two countries.

Around 130 Fijian soldiers are being deployed to participate in key training exercises called Exercise Talisman Sabre 2025 and Exercise Coral Warrior 2025.

This is the first time a Pacific defence force has sent a group like this to Australia, and both governments are optimistic that it will lead to similar deployments in the future.

According to the Australian Defence Force (ADF), the Fijians will work closely with the ADF at Gallipoli Barracks in Brisbane, participating in training exercises to familiarise themselves with each other's ways of operating.

“In the spirit of Vuvale, Australia and Fiji share a strong Defence partnership built on mutual benefit, cooperation and respect,” Admiral David Johnston, Australia's Chief of Defence Force, says.

“The Republic of Fiji Military Forces rotational company pilot uplifts the interoperability of our forces and is an excellent opportunity for our nations.

“I am pleased that Defence is able to partner with Fiji to deliver an extended Republic of Fiji Military Forces deployment to Australia.”

The coming months will allow Fijian and Australian soldiers to train and collaborate closely, preparing for a series of joint exercises at Talisman Sabre 2025, which the ADF says will improve their skills and teamwork.

"By training, exercising and deploying together, Fiji and Australia are expected to improve their capability and interoperability," Johnston adds.

"The extension of the Vuvale partnership builds on the close cooperation, consultation, and friendship between the two nations.

"The commitment to this rotational company pilot demonstrates ties built on mutual interests and training objectives."

The Australian government says the partnership reflects Canberra and Suva's ongoing friendship and cooperation, showing their commitment to working together for a peaceful and secure Pacific region.

The ADF will also participate in smaller exercises throughout the year, including Exercise Croix du Sud in New Caledonia.
