Now it’s time for Will’s Word…

The recent sinking of the HMNZS Manawanui raises questions about our diplomatic relationship with Sāmoa.

Acting Defence Minister Chris Penk insists that the government’s response has been adequate and that any claims of a strained relationship are "premature."

Yet, the tone and content of this response suggests otherwise doesn’t it?

While Penk acknowledged Sāmoa's patience and support, he stopped short of offering a formal apology—something Labour MP Peeni Henare emphasised was necessary.

This lack of acknowledgment can come across as dismissive, particularly to those directly affected by the incident.

Also bizarrely Penk’s refusal to discuss costs is downright strange – shouldn’t we be transparent about this stuff?

In an era where transparency is crucial for maintaining trust between nations, such responses might leave Sāmoans feeling sidelined.

The court of inquiry into the incident will be crucial, but the emphasis on making findings public is not enough.

The government must actively work to demonstrate its commitment to the relationship, ensuring that Sāmoa feels valued and respected.
