Fijian man charged after violent stabbing in Sydney’s inner city

Owen Turagavuli faces nine offences after a Melbourne Cup night attack in Darlington left two men in hospital and a woman injured.

A 43-year-old Fijian man has been charged after a violent incident in Sydney’s inner city, police reports confirm.

South Sydney Police say the attack took place on Tuesday night in Darlington at about 9.40pm, local time, when emergency services were called to Abercrombie Street.

The two victims, men aged 47 and 57, were treated for head cuts after being struck with a glass bottle.

CCTV footage published by 7News shows Owen Turagavuli walking with two women when he suddenly shouted, struck one of them and then turned on the two men who intervened.

One man was punched, and a restaurant menu board was smashed over him. The violence escalated when Turagavuli pulled a beer bottle and stabbed both men before fleeing the scene.

Assistant Superintendent Andrew Garner told the network that Turagavuli's behaviour was “really violent, completely unacceptable.

"It’s an unprovoked targeting of those witnesses who gathered around out of concern for the female who alleges the victim of the domestic violence.”

He says Turagavuli was arrested the next day in the Carriageworks/Eveleigh area and charged with nine serious offences, including wounding with intent, domestic violence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and stalking.

Given the serious nature of the charges (stabbing, assaulting multiple victims, use of a weapon), if Turagavuli is found guilty of the more serious wounding with intent offence, he could face up to 25 years in prison.

The exact sentence will depend on factors such as the severity of the injuries, his intent, use of a weapon, and whether he pleads guilty.

Turagavuli has been refused bail and will appear in court.
