Cook Islands' Puaikura strike first on home soil with OFC statement win

The local champions make the perfect start to their Women’s Champions League qualifying campaign, holding firm in the heat to beat Tonga’s Nukuhetulu.

Only a week after the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 Oceania Qualifiers wrapped up, women’s football in the Pacific is already back in focus.

Nukuhetulu FC from Tonga, PanSa FC from American Sāmoa, and Cook Islands' Puaikura FC are contesting the first-ever Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Women’s Champions League qualifiers.

Backed by home support and driven by purpose, Puaikura FC made their move early in Rarotonga on Wednesday and didn’t let it slip.

Puaikura FC made home advantage count with an opening day 2-0 victory over Nukuhetulu FC.

Head coach Daniel Taokia said ahead of Wednesday's match that they are determined to reach the next stage and look to draw strength from the home crowd.

“It very important for us to try reach next stage. For Puaikura FC this is the first time in the OFC Women’s Champions League, so we just want to give our best and show what we can do.

“If we go through, it will be big achievement not only for the club but also for Cook Islands football – and yes, playing at home make it more special.

“To have our supporters, family, and community behind us give the players extra motivation. We really want to make them proud and put on good performance for everyone who come to watch,” Taokia said.

In testing tropical conditions, the hosts controlled much of the match but were pushed hard by a Nukuhetulu side that looked sharp on the break.

The game stayed open with chances at both ends which kept it finely balanced.

Despite Puaikura’s grip on possession and territory, it was Nukuhetulu who threatened first.

Vika Mafi dragged an early effort wide before Sophiana Moala forced Rianna Pepe into a smart save at the near post.

That early warning didn’t last long.

Puaikura turned control into goals on the half-hour mark. Tearoa Rouru timed her run perfectly, latching onto a well-weighted pass from Victoria Fatiaki and finishing calmly past Carollyne Fotu to give the hosts the lead.

Fatiaki almost doubled the advantage soon after but sent her shot wide with the goal in sight, a rare miss in an otherwise confident display.

The second half followed a familiar pattern. Puaikura stayed on the front foot and were rewarded just seven minutes after the restart.

Ngamata Moekaa was brought down in the box and Primrose Savage stepped up to convert the penalty with composure, extending the lead to 2-0.

To their credit, Nukuhetulu kept pushing. Even as the heat began to take its toll, they searched for a way back into the contest.

Substitute Lupe Vaea came closest late on, her long-range effort rising just over the bar in stoppage time.

But the damage had already been done.

Nukuhetulu head coach Lafaele Moala described the tournament as a massive opportunity for his team to test themselves against high-level regional competition.

“This is a very special moment for us and for Tonga football. It’s the first time a team from Tonga is at the OFC Women’s Champions League, we feel very proud and happy and it’s a big honour for players, staff, and everyone back home.

“Women’s football in Tonga is growing more now, more girls playing, the level getting better, and more belief coming. This is a chance not only to compete, but also to represent our country, inspire young girls, and show we can play at this level.”

Puaikura stayed organised, managed the closing moments well, and secured a crucial opening win.

It was one that puts them firmly in the frame as they chase a place in the OFC Women’s Champions League proper.

Next up, a decisive test against PanSa later this week with qualification on the line.
