Pride of a nation: PNG Chiefs unveil jersey after court victory

Papua New Guinea’s NRL entry passes its biggest milestone yet with a cultural reveal in Port Moresby after overcoming NZ Rugby’s legal challenge.

Fresh off a major High Court victory, the PNG Chiefs have officially unveiled their inaugural jersey in Port Moresby, giving rugby league fans across Papua New Guinea their first look at the identity of the National Rugby League’s (NRL) newest franchise.

The historic milestone comes just days after the High Court in Wellington turned down New Zealand Rugby’s application for an interim injunction over the Chiefs trademark last week.

Friday’s ruling clears the way for the Pacific club to launch its brand ahead of its 2028 NRL debut.

Designed by a team of Papua New Guinean graphic artists, the bold new look features cultural artwork by renowned local artist Tabu.

The club's emblem incorporates four cultural symbols: a feather headpiece representing status, a cassowary bone for courage, a face shaped like the PNG mainland, and kina shells representing wealth.

Lorna McPherson, PNG Chiefs chief executive, says the launch gives millions of fans an identity they can finally call their own.

“Today marks one of the most significant milestones in the journey of the PNG Chiefs. This is the first time that our club has its true, complete identity - a logo and jersey that our players, partners and fans can hold as their own.

“The logo of the PNG Chiefs tells a story about Papua New Guinea - our people, what makes us strong and what makes us unique.

“The Jersey of the PNG Chiefs is more than what players wear when they take to the field. It is a symbol of belonging, unity and the opportunity to represent millions of Papua New Guineans on the national stage.”

Catherine Harris PNG Chiefs chair said every detail of the jersey design is rooted in national pride.

“In reflecting the culture, character and pride of the nation, this identity belongs to more than the club - it belongs to the people of Papua New Guinea, and we want everyone involved with this great club to feel like they are a part of something truly special.

“As we build towards 2028 and then beyond, we will look back in this defining moment as a pivotal step in creating a sustainable and successful club - helping to deliver a legacy that future generations of Papua New Guineans can be proud of.”

The launch brought together PNG community leaders, the Australian government representatives, PNG Chiefs officials and the NRL executives to celebrate the club’s rise.

The Australian government has pledged A$600 million (NZ$741m) over 10 years to back the expansion as part of its broader Pacific rugby league partnership.

PNG Prime Minister James Marape praised the backing, calling it "a worthy cause to all who pay tax in Australia”.

Sandis Tsaka, PNG Rugby Football League chairman, acknowledged the long journey to this milestone, telling TVWAN that while it had taken "a lot of commitment from a lot of people,”the national excitement surrounding the PNG Chiefs brand is now undeniable.

Supporter jerseys are set to go on sale through licensed outlets across Papua New Guinea, with international orders available online in Australia and across the diaspora.
