Cook Islands Rugby is making waves on the international stage and has set its sights on an exciting new chapter in France later this year.

After a strong performance at the recent Fiji Hamilton 7s, the Cook Islands team reached the semi-finals of the bowl series.

“It was a huge accomplishment for our team,” says Maia Manuela, the President of Cook Islands Rugby New Zealand.

“Playing against Fijian teams is always a challenge, but our boys gave it their all.”

Manuela says the tournament was challenging, as injuries sidelined several players. But those who remained stepped up and finished the competition on a high note.

“We’re really proud of them. They showed resilience and heart, which is what Cook Islands Rugby is all about.”

The team’s focus has shifted to an even bigger stage: France. Manuela recently announced that the final squad of 12 players has been selected from New Zealand, with two additional players joining from Europe.

“We’ve been in contact with Cook Islanders based in Europe, and they’ve agreed to join us for the tournaments,” she says.

The names of the selected players will be officially announced soon on the Cook Islands Rugby New Zealand Facebook and Instagram pages.

The team will depart at the end of May for a two-week tour, competing in two tournaments, one in Cognac and another in Strasbourg, near the German border.

“We have faith in the boys we’ve chosen. This is a huge step for us, and we’re excited to take the Cook Islands name to the world stage.” Manuela says.

Leading the team is head coach Junior Kiria, assisted by Oprah, who also serves as team manager. Together, they work tirelessly to prepare the squad for the upcoming tour.

Manuela says this tour is an opportunity to assess where Cook Islands Rugby stands on the global stage.

“We want our players to see the level of rugby played internationally.

“If we’re not up to par, we’ll know what to work on. If we’re ahead, that’s even better. This is about realising our potential and showing the world that Cook Islands Rugby has a place in the global game.”

Many of the selected players were born and raised in the Cook Islands, while others were born in New Zealand but are ineligible to play for other national teams.

“This is their opportunity to represent the Cook Islands and show what they’re capable of,” Manuela says.

As the team prepare for their journey, Manuela is calling on the Cook Islands community to rally behind them.

“It will be a huge honour to carry the name of the Cook Islands to the world. We hope our people will support these players and follow their journey.

“This is a new adventure for our team, and we’re excited to see what we can achieve.”
