Will’s Word: One of the world’s biggest raves is coming to Aotearoa

Ultra Worldwide Music Festival is officially landing in Wellington, and I’ve got to give the Coalition its flowers.

I suppose I should be thanking the government today for partly being responsible for one of the world's biggest raves coming to New Zealand. Because their Events Attraction Fund has secured arguably one of the biggest dance music festivals on the planet.

Yes, Aotearoa, the Ultra Worldwide Music Festival is coming to Wellington. As someone who loves this type of music, which I'll concede is niche, Ultra is usually held in places like Hong Kong and Miami. Cities with skylines and a nightlife that doesn't politely close early.

So the fact that New Zealand has locked this in, it's wild. It's huge. It's unprecedented. I genuinely couldn't be more pumped. And hey, credit where credit is due. The government's Events Attraction Fund is partly to thank for this.

It's not often you catch me saying “cheers coalition”, but today? I'll say it. Thank you. Now 20,000 people are expected to descend on Wellington for this thing. That's a packed stadium's worth of ravers injecting much needed money into the capital.

Think hotels, bars, restaurants, taxis, Ubers, the works. If Wellington ever needed an economic pick me up, and let's be real it does, this is it. This is smart investment, the kind that actually generates growth. So sometimes you spend money to make money.

In this case: spend money to make 20,000 people lose their minds to a DJ drop on the waterfront. So sincerely to the Coalition, thank you. I'll take a win when I see one. I'll be the first in line for this.

Now, here's the big question: will any coalition MPs be there? Imagine it. Christopher Luxon, David Seymour, and Winston Peters with a glow stick at a rave. A bipartisan mosh pit forming during the headliner.

Honestly, I'd pay extra just to see that sight. Until then, I'll just be here counting the days until Wellington becomes Miami for a weekend. Thank you very much.

That's Will's Word.
