Will’s Word: ‘Drill baby drill’ and continue drowning the Pacific

The Government’s revival of fossil fuel exploration is a step back for Aotearoa and a direct threat to island nations fighting for survival.

God, you've got to love politicians sometimes, don't you? So in touch with the needs of young people. So committed to making decisions that will have a positive impact on future generations.

Especially this current lot in the beehive - not. This week, the Government reopened applications for oil and gas exploration across the whole of Aotearoa. The first time since the 2018 ban.

They've even created a faster route for awarding permits. Industry leaders were quick to cheer it on as a win for energy security, but let's call it what it is.

It is a back step for New Zealand, and it's a slap in the face to our Pacific neighbours, whose very existence depends on everyone doing their bit to limit global warming.

What makes things like this worse are comments like Resource Minister Shane Jones' “drill baby drill”. Easy words for old men in suits when the consequences of their reckless decisions will be inherited by the next generation.

Of course, it's not just a problem here in Aotearoa. Just days ago, we had US President Donald Trump labelling climate change a “hoax”.

Honestly, sometimes it feels like we're living in a poorly written and poorly acted dystopian film. This may sound harsh, but it feels as though our world is increasingly run by muppets with inflated egos and zero common sense.

Start making better decisions. Future generations deserve an Earth worth living on. Heck, Pacific Island nations depend on better decision-making.

That's Will's Word.
