Pacific excellence set to shape All Blacks' future

Tana Umaga, tipped to join Dave Rennie, highlights growing recognition of Pacific leadership in NZ rugby.

Pacific leadership is set to take another significant step in the highest levels of New Zealand rugby with Tana Umaga expected to join the coaching team of New Zealand All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie.

According to a report from 1News, Umaga will be named as an assistant coach in the coming days, marking another milestone moment for Pacific representation within the national side.

The appointment signals a growing recognition of Pacific excellence within New Zealand rugby leadership.

Umaga, the first All Blacks captain of Sāmoan heritage, has long been regarded as one of the most respected figures in the game, both for his achievements on the field and his influence off it.

Currently head coach of Moana Pasifika in the Super Rugby Pacific competition, Umaga has led the franchise since its inception in 2023.

His coaching journey has included roles with the Blues, the New Zealand Under-20 rugby union team, and Counties Manukau rugby team, developing talent across the New Zealand rugby pathway.

His expected move to the All Blacks also strengthens the Pacific influence within the national programme, with Rennie himself becoming the first head coach of Pasifika heritage to lead the team.

For many across the Pacific rugby community, Umaga’s appointment is more than just a coaching change, it represents cultural competency and leadership being recognised at the highest level of the game.

Rennie has spoken about his intention to reconnect the All Blacks with the legacy and cultural foundations of the jersey. Bringing in a former captain of Umaga’s mana and standing reflects that commitment.

The move will leave Moana Pasifika searching for a new head coach next season, and several experienced Pacific coaches could be in line for the role.

Among those mentioned is Orlando Soakai, who previously coached the Wellington Lions, while Seilala Mapusua, who led Manu Sāmoa at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, also brings valuable international coaching experience.

Pacific influence within the game is also reflected at the governance level. Former All Blacks hooker Keven Mealamu and respected business leader Caren Rangi currently sit on the board of New Zealand Rugby, highlighting the growing presence of Pacific leadership across both the field and the boardroom.

While Rennie has yet to publicly confirm his full coaching group, the expected appointment of Umaga signals the beginning of a new era, one that recognises the deep Pacific influence that has long been central to the success and identity of New Zealand rugby.
