Will's Word: Can NZ afford to go slow on climate change?

Pacific Mornings' host William Terite says a recent report on NZ's projected carbon emissions makes for grim reading.

This is a transcript of Will's Word on 14 October, 2024:

Now it’s time for Will’s Word…

New Zealand stands at a critical crossroads in its fight against climate change. A recent report from the Motu think tank reveals if we don’t start making international deals to offset our emissions, we will fail to meet our 2030 climate target – I’m not surprised by it to be honest, especially with the policies being pushed by this Government.

The report makes for grim reading – the cost of inaction is the most bewildering. Estimates suggest that we will need to invest upwards of $3 billion to cover our emissions shortfall, and waiting until the last minute could quadruple this expense. Climate Change Minister Simon Watts has been warned but will he act? Depends on your definition of action.

But ultimately the clock is ticking. New Zealand must move beyond the sidelines and engage in meaningful international partnerships to meet our climate goals.

The path forward may be challenging, but the consequences of inaction are far too great. It's time to step up and take responsibility for our commitments—not just for ourselves, but for the planet.

So will the Government heed the call? That remains to be seen – but given the policy platform its pushing, including the reversal on deep sea mining and oil exploration — I highly doubt it.

What will it take for serious action? Seriously?
