Watching the recent US presidential debate, I couldn't help but feel concerned about what a second Trump presidency could mean, especially for vulnerable regions like the Pacific.

President Biden's performance fell short, raising doubts about his ability to lead effectively. His struggles could potentially pave the way for Donald Trump's return to office. Under Trump's previous term, there was a shift away from global agreements like the Paris Climate Accord, which directly affects low-lying Pacific nations facing rising sea levels.

International Relations Expert Geoffrey Miller joined #PacificMornings to discuss his thoughts on the debate, and whether Biden should step aside:

Trump's approach to foreign policy prioritised America's immediate interests over international cooperation. This could sideline issues crucial to Pacific Island states, such as climate resilience and economic development.

In contrast, Biden's promises to rejoin global agreements and prioritise climate action offered hope for Pacific Island nations. His administration signalled a return to diplomacy and collaboration, which are vital for addressing regional challenges.

The upcoming election isn't just about domestic policies; it's about how US leadership impacts global issues like climate change and international cooperation. For the Pacific, the choice between continuity and change could determine their ability to confront pressing challenges and secure their future.

That's Will's Word.
