'It's going to be amazing': Mana Moana set to get the whole family dancing

Mana Moana is a fusion of two worlds of music with choral singers and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra musician performing traditional Pacific songs on stage.

After selling out Wellington's Michael Fowler Centre last year, the Pacific-led musical showcase Mana Moana will be performing at Auckland’s Spark Arena on 24 November.

The one-off event will bring together two worlds of music, with 80 choral singers and 78 New Zealand Symphony Orchestra musicians a wide range of traditional songs from across the Pacific.

The project is curated by musical director Fepulea'i Helen Tupa'i of Signature Choir, and she spoke with Tofiga Fepulea'i on 531pi's Pacific Days, about what audiences can expect.

"Our audience is generational," she says.

"People will come in their households, with grandma, the parents ... and the grandchildren - and our songs will be so moving, and people will dance - particularly our elderly."

The mother of three, who first fell in love with choir music as a member of Newtown PIC, says they made sure to include locals in this iteration of the showcase.

"Because we're taking it to Auckland, it was a no brainer to find some singers from Auckland to join us, so we're really blessed to have 30 singers from the community to join us too.

"We're not all professional singers but we're all people who love singing. It's going to be amazing - you have to be there."
