‘It’s about building our confidence back’: Warriors veteran determined to produce better performances

Former Warriors captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is adamant the side will learn from poor performances over the past few weeks.

A veteran in the New Zealand Warriors side says the team just “needs to get better” after suffering consecutive losses over the past two weeks.

In both games against the 11th placed Dragons, and 16th placed Titans, the Warriors got off to a firing start scoring quick early tries. And in both games, the team would then lose the lead, and the game.

Tuivasa-Sheck says it’s important the team builds their confidence despite the two losses.

“It’s all about building that confidence back, we started off in pre-season when everything was going right and everyone had good attitudes.

“Now it’s one of those moments where you can start to get down in confidence, not believing in (the goal) so it’s massive we trust the system, we trust Webby, we trust what we’re doing.

“It’s about sticking together and staying in the moment, doing our job.”

Tuivasa-Sheck says the side came together the day after their game, to celebrate prop Mitch Barnett’s 30th birthday.

“We all got around him, and all the boys turned up and it’s moments like that where you go ‘let’s all stick together, and enjoy this ride together’.”

Head coach Andrew Webster says the loss to the Titans was tough, but he is still focused on bringing out the best in the group.

“It’s not a nice feeling because I know they want more, and they’re trying hard. You can see how well they prepared. I loved today (at training) that we had some laughter, and we want to get better.

“That’s our thing at the moment is improving as a unit, as a team. They’ve turned up with a great attitude to want to get better.

“We didn’t gloss over anything, we saw everything we weren’t proud of and saw everything we loved so we’re staying consistent about it.”

Webster says getting the fundamentals right is important for the team’s way forward.

“We pride ourselves on our fundamentals [to] stand up under pressure, and they haven’t for the past couple of weeks. I think it’s a combination of things, one, when something doesn’t go our way, getting over it fast and moving on to the next job.

“Also, getting better at what we value so much, we’ve got no excuses.”

The Warriors face the Newcastle Knights this Sunday in Newcastle.
