In the wake of the recent devastating events in New Caledonia this week I thought it was a timely reminder to reflect on the importance of respecting and valuing indigenous peoples.

The chaos unfolding in New Caledonia at the moment is deeply troubling, and I think highlights unresolved tensions and historical injustices. For a long time now the Kanak people have advocated for self determination and sovereignty, but their aspirations have often been met with resistance and repression.

Just to put it into context, New Caledonia became a French overseas territory almost eight decades ago and has limited autonomy within the French legal system.

Earlier this week France passed reforms that would allow French residents who’ve lived in New Caledonia for 10 years or more, the right to vote in local elections.

Which brings me to my point, it seems at least from afar, the Kanak community has been anything but respected by the French Government.

Respecting and valuing indigenous peoples means more than just paying lip service to diversity and inclusion, it requires genuine commitment to listening to their concerns, honouring the rights, and embracing their cultural heritage.

The French Government's decision this week completely ignores all of that. And is why it’s imperative President Emanuel Macron now prioritises dialogue and negotiation as a pathway to peace.

Heavy-handed tactics and security force interventions will I think only exacerbate tensions and deepen divisions.
