Players worldwide gathered in Rarotonga over the past week to display their skills on the netball court while soaking up the sun and enjoying a tropical getaway.

Netball in Paradise is in its 11th year and has lured locals, international players, beginners, and the sport's elite to battle it out at the Multi-Sports Complex in Nikao.

New Zealand Men’s and Mixed International player Marutawhaorere Delamere jumped at the opportunity to play.

“I initially planned to get away for a holiday, and it was around the same time as the tournament, [so when] I got asked to play for a local team, I said ‘yes, why not?’

“I have played in this tournament several times and love coming back. The level of hospitality is like no other from both the locals and the event organisers.’’

The annual social netball tournament, supported by sponsor Bank South Pacific, is a key fundraising event for Netball Cook Islands. The funds raised go back into local netball development.

For local netball enthusiasts, the tournament offers an opportunity to compete against skilled players from abroad and provides officiating experience for netball officials.

Delamere says the level of the competition has improved over the years.

“This year's competition is fierce. There are so many teams playing, and the talent is just out of this world, from raw talent to trained talent.

“With ANZ players participating, I think we are going to see some really good netball.’’

Teams can also experience a range of group activities, from lagoon cruises with guided snorkelling tours to mountain safari cruises and vibrant cultural shows.

The tournament, which was held from 29 November to 6 December, featured five divisions: Under 15, U17, Social Ladies, Open Ladies, and the dynamic Open Mixed division.
