Mark Brown needs to step down.

His decision to push forward a partnership deal with China, without even a hint of transparency, is a slap in the face to New Zealand, and a massive risk to the Cook Islands.

We’re talking about 60 years of self-governance, in free association with New Zealand, during which cooperation and consultation were always supposed to be important.

The Cook Islands may have the freedom to make its own moves, but there are clear conditions including an agreement to consult with New Zealand on matters of defence and security.

Brown’s lack of communication is irresponsible and reckless, plain and simple.

Now, he’s supposed to be jetting off to China with a delegation to sign an agreement that no one seems to have any details about, but Brown’s answer is that he’s doing what’s best for prosperity.

PMN is US

Well, prosperity can’t be built on secrecy, and aligning with China, a nation that has been increasing its influence in the Pacific doesn’t sound like a smart move for long-term stability. Not when you’re ignoring the need for consultation with your closest partner.

Let’s be real here, Mark Brown has utterly failed to be transparent, and he’s playing fast and loose with the future of the Cook Islands.

His actions betray everything the Cook Islands has stood for in its relationship with New Zealand.

There’s no confidence left in this leadership.

The Cook Islands deserves better, and it’s high time for a leader who respects the agreements, values transparency, and puts the nation’s best interests first.

So Code Brown Mark Brown. It’s over. Time to go.

That’s Will’s Word.
