Will's Word: Farewell to a Pope who made faith feel human

Pope Francis has passed at 88, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, courage, and connection, having shown the world what it means to live faith through action.

If you're just waking up this morning - devastating news overnight with Pope Francis passing at the age of 88.

His passing marks the end of a papacy that redefined what it means to lead the Catholic Church in the 21st century. He was the first pope from Latin America, and, to me, spoke openly about the climate crisis, championed migrants and refugees, and tried to make the Church more inclusive, especially toward those who had long felt left out, like LGBTQ+ Catholics.

For some, he didn't go far enough. For others, he went too far. But no one could deny he was different. A pope who, frankly, spoke with heart and wasn't afraid to challenge centuries of tradition.

He was often described as the pope of the poor, not just because of what he said, but how he lived. He chose simple housing, drove a small car, and constantly reminded the world that faith should be lived through action, not just words.

Even near the end, despite a serious illness, he showed up on Easter Sunday, and just being there waving to the crowd was enough to remind people what he stood for: presence and purpose.

Tributes are pouring in from all corners of the world, from world leaders to everyday people, and the message is abundantly clear: Pope Francis made faith feel more human, more compassionate, and more connected to the real struggles of life today.
