Opinion

My Perspective: Is the disposable vape ban too little, too late?

The Government’s disposable vape ban starts today, but with rangatahi already on pod systems, the real issue may be slipping past us.

The Government's latest move to tackle youth vaping kicks in today, with disposable vapes now officially banned.

It's part of a wider law change passed last year, so it also introduces stricter rules around how vape products are sold and displayed in shops. The question now is, will it actually work?

For years, youth vaping rates have surged, with colourful packaging, fruity flavours and cheap disposable vapes making it easier for rangatahi to get hooked. And to be honest, almost no one is buying disposables anymore.

They're all into those flash new pod vapes that are rechargeable and easy to refill. So, while banning disposables might seem like a big move, it could also be missing the mark.

If we're serious about protecting young people, the real challenge isn't just banning one type of vape, it's keeping up with how fast the industry adapts, and how easily it still reaches our kids.

That's My Perspective
