The Pacific Foreign Ministers' meeting in Suva last week expressed the need for monitoring of treated waste water from the Fukushima nuclear plant.
Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta is endorsing the Pacific Island Forum's decision to continue dialogue with Japan over the release of treated nuclear waster water into the Pacific Ocean.
Japan started discharging nuclear wastewater from its defunct Fukushima nuclear plant last month.
Nanaia Mahuta was in Suva last week attending the Pacific Foreign Ministers' meeting where leaders expressed the need for continued monitoring.
"We highlighted the fact that there is no regional scientific capacity to participate in the ongoing monitoring," Mahuta told Pacific Mornings.
"We recommended that that should be something to be considered so that we can assess the impact of treated wastewater on the health of the marine environment and also on human health."
