Pacific Mornings host William Terite explains why revitalising our maths education is a good move by the government.
This is a transcript from Will’s Word.
Now it’s time for Will’s Word…
The Prime Minister’s initiative to overhaul New Zealand’s primary school maths curriculum is a good move toward improving educational standards.
By adopting a curriculum modelled on the successful systems of Singapore and Australia, the government is setting a solid path towards revitalising our maths education.
The introduction of new workbooks, teacher guides, and resources for every classroom is a positive move, but the proof will be in the pudding.
The $20 million investment in professional development for teachers is also a good step in ensuring that educators are well-equipped to deliver the new curriculum effectively.
Also the requirement for future teacher candidates to pass NCEA Level 2 maths is great and something I naively thought you would’ve already had to have .
Overall it's a positive and proactive announcement, but whether it’ll be achievable to implement in such a short amount of time remains to be seen.
That’s Will’s Word.
