Will’s Word: The Govt just flunked their performance review

A 4.2 rating from the public? If this were your job, you’d be polishing the ol’ CV - Kiwis are fed up with high rents, expensive groceries, and long waits to see a doctor.

New Zealanders have rated the government a dismal 4.2 out of 10.

According to the latest Ipsos survey results, that is the lowest score on record since Ipsos started keeping tabs in 2017.

If I were to put this in an analogy that works for Will, if this were a dating profile review, you might still take the risk depending on how desperate you are.

If it were your work performance review though? You’d want to start dusting off the old CV.

Despite cost of living concerns dropping slightly, inflation may have eased - Good luck telling people that when they're at the grocery store though.

Rent’s still sky high, still a big issue for people, and filling up your car? Still a luxury.

The top issue for New Zealanders according to this survey is health - 41 per cent of Kiwis.

Which makes sense considering trying to see a doctor is difficult these days and then by the time you get an appointment, your illness has either gone away or perhaps has become a personality trait.

Surprisingly, this is what caused a big hiss and a roar at the last election, crime - Kiwis wanted to get tough on crime.

Listen to Will’s Word on Facebook below.

It's what we heard from the coalition partners through their election promises. Surprisingly, crime has actually slipped down the list of concerns, which could mean a few things, right?

Either means things are improving or people have just simply accepted their fate.

Either way you look at the results from this poll, the government isn't exactly basking in the glow of public approval.

This is where it's a win for National though. National is still the go-to party for handling the economy, inflation and crime, but not by much.

Labour's somehow won back the top spot on housing. I don't know how because if we take a look at the last Labour government and its track record on housing, might I remind you of KiwiBuild? Terrible.

It's honestly like winning a competition for who is the least terrible option.

You might ask what's the overall mood in the country at the moment, William?

Well, it is grim. A whopping 41 per cent of people gave the government a rating of 3 or lower. For context, the last time the rating ranked this low, Labour was on its way out so I'm sure National is taking note.

You might ask, ‘surely there's some kind of positivity to this report, William’?

Depends on your definition of positivity because the real winners here? The 10 per cent of Kiwis who think no party is capable of running the economy.

At least they've embraced the art of low expectations, again, like a dating profile.

So, 4.2 out of 10, a comeback story in the making? Maybe not.

If the trend continues? Well, whakaaria mai to the National Party, New Zealand First and ACT.

That's Will's Word.
