The Jewels of the Cook Islands is a performing arts group from New Zealand that celebrates its culture through dance and song.

Established in 2020 by Briannah Rorani, the team creates a welcoming environment for young Cook Islands LGBTQ+ women to express their passion for culture and performance.

The group's vision of providing a safe space to express cultural ideas has led it to achieve milestones unmatched by any other team of its kind.

Their latest milestone is being the headline act on the Edgewater Resorts ‘Dine and Dance’ stage in Rarotonga.

“This marks the first occasion the Jewels of the Cook Islands have performed in Rarotonga as a complete team.

“Last year, we only came as individuals, so Matty Matangi and I decided that it would be a valuable experience for the entire group to join, particularly since, for some members, this will be their first visit to Rarotonga.’’

Rorani shares the significance of such opportunities for the group and for individuals in the diaspora.

“The impact this positively puts on the group is being able to now understand where the true beauty of our cultural performance comes from; I mean the singing and dancing. They get to see, feel and smell the true essence of our culture”.

It is widely acknowledged that the rainbow community in the Cook Islands is the backbone of society, consistently working behind the scenes to prepare, choreograph, and support events.

Matty Matangi, a performer and executive member who has been with the team since its inception, tirelessly promotes the Cook Islands culture.

‘’It affirms the legitimacy of our creative efforts and the values we uphold.

“In light of the recent decriminalisation of LGBTQ+ relationships in the Cook Islands, our presence in Rarotonga provides a powerful platform to inspire local progress for our community.

“Furthermore, it reinforces our vision for the future, illustrating the opportunities we can create through dedication and perseverance.’’

Since its establishment, The Jewels have taken charge of their own journey and have made remarkable progress.

The performing arts group is familiar with the bright lights and grand stages of the Cook Islands' arts scene.

They made history as the first LGBTQ+ performing arts group to perform at Te Maeva Nui Aotearoa 2022, one of the largest venues in the Cook Islands.

They regularly perform on the Rage stage at music and dance concerts and Auckland's Pasifika Festival, celebrating the Cook Islands community.

The team has returned to New Zealand and is preparing for this year's Te Maeva Nui celebrations in Aotearoa and the Cook Islands.
