This is a transcript of Will's Word from 12 September, 2024:

Now it’s time for Will’s Word…

As the 2024 U.S. presidential race heats up, the first debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump offered a mix of sharp exchanges and dramatic moments.

Kamala Harris clearly aimed to provoke Trump, successfully getting under his skin with jabs about rally sizes and other criticisms. Her approach seemed to rattle Trump, who responded with his characteristic bravado and personal attacks.

Harris’s most poignant moment came when she addressed abortion rights in the wake of Roe v. Wade’s overturn. She shared personal and emotional stories, highlighting the stakes for women's health care. Trump, on the other hand, perpetuated misleading claims about abortion and was fact-checked during the debate, though his stance on a national abortion ban remained unclear.

Immigration was another major focus for Trump, who repeatedly used it as a campaign weapon. His rhetoric grew increasingly bizarre with unfounded claims about immigrants harming pets, prompting a fact-check from the moderator. Harris, meanwhile, tried to stay on message, emphasising unity and addressing issues with a personal touch, though occasionally her points seemed somewhat disjointed.

Harris appeared more confident compared to previous Democratic performances, while Trump maintained his usual aggressive style. The debate showcased a stark contrast in campaigning styles:

Harris’s call for togetherness versus Trump’s continued focus on division and controversy. With the debate sparking significant media buzz and public reaction, it’s clear the election race is far from ordinary.
