Now it’s time for Will’s Word…

The Government’s new sentencing reforms show it’s perhaps walking the talk with its tough on crime stance.

To bring you up to speed on the plan, Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith unveiled plans to impose tougher penalties, including caps on sentence discounts and stricter rules for repeat offenders, especially youth.

They argue the changes are aimed at addressing rising crime rates and restoring public confidence in the justice system.

So for a wee bit more context it means, capping sentence discounts at 40%, ending repeated leniency for youth and remorse, introducing new aggravating factors for crimes against workers and online glorification.

Adjusting discounts for early guilty pleas - while these measures aim to deter crime and protect victims, they also raise concerns.

Critics worry that harsher penalties could lead to overcrowded prisons and may not address the root causes of crime.

The focus on tougher sentencing may deepen divides between those who favour strict justice and those who advocate for rehabilitation.
