Why the govt should heed its former Children Minister's pleas

Pacific Mornings host William Terite on why the Government should take into account Tracey Martin’s view.

This is a transcript from Will’s Word on Tuesday, 6th of August.

It’s always pretty awkward when a former MP speaks out against one of their own.

But former Children’s Minister Tracey Martin, a former NZ First MP, has done just that. She’s pleading for the Government to stop the repeal of Section 7AA from the Oranga Tamariki Act, which she warns is a culturally sensitive approach to child protection.

The government's argument for repealing this section is that it prioritises cultural factors over child safety.

Martin argues that Section 7AA is essential for transforming Oranga Tamariki into a true child protection agency rather than just a reactive crisis service.

The government should perhaps listen or at least take into account Martin's advice and recognise that respecting cultural frameworks, like Whāngai, is integral to effective child welfare.

Her expertise and experience provide a valuable perspective that should not be ignored in the legislative process.
